The ruby will never be requested until you have reached level 80+ of The Mines. Ruby will be requested by Emily as part of the "Rock Rejuvenation" quest at the Special Orders board outside Mayor Lewis' house. May be used in the Gem Birds puzzle on Ginger Island.
It can also be used as a gift, since Emily and Clint love Ruby. It can be sold for 250 Gold.
Penny first took a liking to Ruby in "The Stray", when Ruby called her "friend".
What is a Ruby? It's a mineral you'll discover by mining on floors 80+ of the Mines. You can sell them for 250g, but if you have a Gemologist Profession, its price increases to 325g.

Prismatic Shards cannot be duplicated in a Crystalarium.
Doubt it, the requirements to make a crystalarium are hard to get and although diamonds make 750 each, they aren't very profitable since they take long to create. The moment you can make a crystalarium farm is the moment you're able to make much more (and faster) money off of other things in game.
